Minimising the Risk

Almost all businesses that use water have the potential to have a cross-connection. Some are a greater health risks than others. Examples of consumers that pose a health or pollution hazard to the public water supply system are: Hospitals, Mortuaries, convalescent homes, film laboratories, chemical and petroleum storage facilities, sewage treatment plants, power plants, car washers, laundries, boilers or cooling systems, veterinary and pet grooming, beauty salons, fire suppression systems, schools and colleges.

One of the most commonly overlooked items of potential backflow hazard is the hose connection outlet, hose bib or domestic garden tap. Fitted Hose connections have many good uses, however hose connections could also account for as much as 90% of known backflow incidents.

Hose connections can cause problems such as use with chemical and fertilizer dispensers, cleaning out sewer systems, filling pools, ponds and attachment to high pressure cleaners.

Hose bibs are used with a hose to fill buckets, fertilizer tanks, wash cars, attach sprinkler systems and all the other things you do with a garden tap and hose, everyone has the potential for a cross-connection. Installing hose bib vacuum breakers can control the potential risks of backflow from this most common method of cross-connection, the hose outlet..

Hoses are connected to hose bib outlets via a threaded hose connection, that are easy and inexpensive to protect from backflow hazards by equipping each threaded hose connection with a hose bib vacuum breaker.

The purpose of the hose bib vacuum breaker is to protect the public water supply system from the possibility of contamination by isolating real or potential sources of contamination or pollution that may backflow or backsiphonage into the public water supply system.
